This is why we can't have nice things is a video installation with the video and tv screen turned away from the viewer facing the wall and causing an afterglow of images and colours against the wall. The work was generated by visiting several different Dublin galleries and exhibition openings during the time of the residency. The artist secretly transcribed comments overheard from visitors during the exhibitions about the artwork on view without their knowledge. The works that were on display was also photographed by the artist and added to the video in sequence with the commentary. The commentary was reenacted by an actor in a whisper to perpetuate this idea of a secret or a closed inaccessible narrative. This piece investigates the relationship between artwork and viewer interaction outside of the artist and curator. The work walks the fine line of public opinion oscillating between humour and scathing review.
